April 2016 – Sagebrush Patriots 05 Boys celebrate being GBYSL Competitive League Champions two seasons in a row!

Who We Are

Sagebrush Patriots 05 Boys is a competitive youth soccer team (sometimes called a travel team) based in Reno, Nevada. Our players are born during years 2004, 2005 and 2006. We play in the GBYSL Competitive League during both the Spring and Fall (presently U11 age bracket); compete in the NorCal State Cup each Fall; participate in various competitive tournaments in located in Reno, Carson City, Sacramento, and the San Francisco Bay Area; and play Futsal (indoor soccer) through the winter months.

Our Coaching and Training Method

The Patriot Academy Training Method, created by John Chavez (Technical Director), is a combination of some of the best and most respected youth soccer academy programs in the world adapted to fit the unique demographics and talent pool of Northern Nevada.

Our training is focused on developing our players technical soccer abilities – their ability to trap, control and pass the soccer ball. The majority of our practice time is allocated to developing coordination, which is the foundation of all technical abilities, teaching and correcting for good soccer technique and turning good technique into habit. All our players are encouraged to take control of the ball and maintain possession. Tactically we aim to control the game, by controlling the ball and maintain possession with the purpose of creating goal scoring opportunities. We never coach our players to “boot it, send it, or kick it long” nor encourage them to dribble through the opposing team. Instead, we ask them all to trap the ball, find a pass, and move into space.

We believe this is the best way for all our players to reach their full soccer potential. The result of a particular game or tournament is less important to us than whether the team (as a whole and as individuals) has improved in terms of controlling the soccer ball. This method is not only successful in terms of developing technical abilities and winning matches, it is more enjoyable to play. Every player, in every position, enjoys time with the ball and is integral to the teams success.
